  • Kids Quilt Size Guide for Indian Cots, Toddler Beds, and Single Beds: The Numbers Parents Actually Need

    Aug 11, 2026

Most quilt size guides online are written for US or UK beds. American crib quilts, British cotbed sizes, inches vs centimetres — it's a lot to sort through when you just want to know if a quilt will fit your child's bed before you place an order.

This guide is for Indian parents. All measurements are in inches and centimetres, and they match the beds most Indian homes actually have.

Why Quilt Sizing Is Confusing for Indian Parents

Indian bed sizes don't follow one universal standard. A "single bed" in India is typically 36 x 72 inches, but it can also be 30 x 72 inches in older homes or children's furniture. Cots vary even more. Add to that the fact that most online stores list quilt dimensions without telling you how much overhang to expect, and you end up either ordering something too small or guessing.

The other issue is that international quilt size charts assume mattress thicknesses that are different from what we commonly use here. A 6-inch foam mattress on a toddler bed needs different overhang than a 4-inch one.

The numbers below are based on standard Indian bed dimensions. Always measure your specific bed if you're unsure — furniture sizes in India can vary by manufacturer and region.

Quilt Sizes for Indian Baby Cots

A standard Indian baby cot mattress is usually 24 x 48 inches (60 x 120 cm). Some larger cots go up to 27 x 54 inches.

For a cot, you want a quilt that covers the mattress with minimal overhang. Too much draping fabric is a safety concern for babies under 12 months — paediatricians generally advise keeping loose bedding out of cribs for infants who aren't yet mobile. For this age group, a thin quilt used as a mat or play surface is often more practical than as a sleeping cover.

A good cot quilt size: 36 x 48 inches (90 x 120 cm). This gives you a few inches of overhang on the sides, which looks neat without being excessive.

Once your baby is past 12 months and starting to move around, a quilt in this size range works well as a light cover during naps.

    Quilt Sizes for Toddler Beds

    Toddler beds in India typically use a mattress of 24 x 48 inches or 30 x 60 inches (75 x 150 cm). Some are closer to a small single at 30 x 72 inches.

For children between 2 and 5 years, you want enough quilt to tuck in slightly or drape comfortably without them constantly kicking it off. A quilt that's too small just ends up on the floor by midnight.

Recommended quilt size for a toddler bed: 40 x 60 inches (100 x 150 cm). This works for most standard toddler beds in India and gives a gentle 5-inch drape on either side of a 30-inch wide mattress.

If your toddler's mattress is on the larger side (30 x 72 inches), consider sizing up to 48 x 72 inches so the quilt actually reaches their feet.

A few things that matter at this age:

    • Weight: lighter quilts (think a single layer of cotton with a thin fill) are better for Indian summers. A heavier quilt is useful only in colder months or if you run AC at night.
    • Washability: toddlers are messy. Check that the quilt can be machine-washed without the print fading.
    • Size for growth: buying a size up means the quilt stays useful for longer.

Quilt Sizes for a Child's Single Bed

The standard single bed in India is 36 x 72 inches (90 x 180 cm). Some children's beds are 30 x 72 inches, especially those bought as part of a kids' furniture set.

For a child between 5 and 12 years, a quilt size of 60 x 90 inches (150 x 225 cm) is a good fit for a 36-inch wide single bed. It gives about 12 inches of drape on each side, which is enough to tuck under the mattress if you prefer, or leave it loose.

If the bed is the narrower 30-inch variety, a 54 x 90 inch (135 x 225 cm) quilt still works well and won't look oversized.

One thing parents sometimes overlook: mattress thickness. If your child's mattress is thick (8 inches or more), the quilt will lose a few inches of side drape just from covering the mattress depth. In that case, size up rather than trying to make a smaller quilt work.

A Few Things Worth Checking Before You Order

Sizes are just one part of the decision. Here are a few other things that actually matter:

    • Fabric weight for Indian seasons: A pure cotton quilt with a light fill is practical for most of India through the year. For hill stations or air-conditioned rooms in cities, a slightly heavier fill makes sense. Avoid anything labelled "winter weight" unless you genuinely need it.
    • Personalisation: If you're buying as a gift or want something the child will feel ownership over, a quilt with their name on it is a small detail that makes a real difference. Kids are much less likely to refuse a quilt that has their name on it.
    • Measuring your bed: If your child's bed is non-standard (an old family cot, a built-in bed, or a mattress on the floor), measure the mattress length, width, and thickness before ordering. Add 10-12 inches to the width for side drape, and make sure the length reaches the foot of the mattress with a few inches to spare.
    • Care instructions: Hand block print quilts should ideally be cold-washed or hand-washed to keep the print intact. Check before you buy if machine washing is important to you.

Getting the size right means the quilt actually gets used. A beautiful quilt that's two sizes too small ends up folded in the cupboard. Take five minutes to measure, match it to the guide above, and you'll have something that works for the next few years.
