How to Size a Tablecloth for Every Indian Dining Table: A Simple Guide by Seater Count
Why tablecloth sizing is worth getting right
A tablecloth that's too short sits awkwardly on the table, exposing legs and edges. One that's too long pools on the floor and becomes a tripping hazard. Both look like an afterthought.
Indian dining tables come in a fairly wide range of sizes depending on whether they're teak heirlooms from your parents' home, a compact 4-seater in a Mumbai flat, or a generous 8-seater in a larger house. So there's no single universal answer to "what size tablecloth should I buy" — but there is a simple method that works every time.
The one rule you need to know: the drop
The drop is the amount of fabric that hangs down on each side of the table. It's the single most important number when sizing a tablecloth.
For everyday dining, a drop of 6 to 8 inches on each side is the sweet spot. It looks intentional, stays out of the way while you're eating, and still covers the table edges properly.
For a formal dinner or a special occasion setup, you can go up to 10-12 inches. Anything beyond that is purely decorative and more appropriate for a buffet table or an event setting.
So the formula is straightforward:
- Measure your table length and width in inches
- Add 12-16 inches to each dimension (6-8 inches of drop on each side)
- That's your ideal tablecloth size
For example: a table that's 36 inches wide and 60 inches long needs a cloth of roughly 48-52 inches by 72-76 inches for a standard drop.
Tablecloth sizes by seater count: a quick reference
Most Indian homes have rectangular dining tables, so here's a practical size guide based on how many people the table seats.
4-seater dining table
A 4-seater is usually around 30-36 inches wide and 48-54 inches long. A tablecloth of 52x68 inches or 54x72 inches works well here.
6-seater dining table
This is the most common table size in Indian homes. A standard 6-seater is typically 36 inches wide and 72 inches long. The most reliable tablecloth size for a 6-seater dining table in India is 60x90 inches. This gives you a clean 6-inch drop on the width and a generous drop on the length that sits just right.
8-seater dining table
An 8-seater table is usually around 36-40 inches wide and 84-90 inches long. Look for a cloth that's 60x108 inches or 60x120 inches depending on the exact length of your table.
10-seater dining table
These are less common in everyday homes but show up in larger family setups. A 60x120 inch or 65x120 inch cloth is the usual recommendation.
A quick note: always measure your actual table before buying. Seater counts are a guide, but table dimensions vary between manufacturers. Two "6-seater" tables from different brands can differ by 6-8 inches in length.
What about round dining tables?
Round tables need a different approach. Instead of length and width, you just need the diameter of your table.
Add the drop twice to your table diameter to get the cloth diameter you need. So a table with a 54-inch diameter, with a 6-inch drop on all sides, needs a round cloth of at least 66 inches across.
Most standard round dining tables that seat 6 people in India fall between 54 and 60 inches in diameter. A 72-inch round tablecloth fits most of these comfortably, giving you a 6-9 inch drop depending on the exact table size.
A few things to check before you buy
Sizing is the main thing, but there are a couple of other details worth thinking about before you order.
Extendable tables
If your dining table has a leaf extension, decide whether you want your tablecloth to work for the extended or the regular length. Most people buy for the regular size and use a different cloth or table runner when extended.
Fabric weight and drape
A heavier cotton cloth drapes differently from a lightweight one. Block print tablecloths made from pure cotton have a natural, relaxed drape that suits everyday dining well. They don't slip around as much as synthetic fabrics and they're much easier to wash.
Shrinkage
Good quality cotton can shrink slightly after the first wash. If a cloth is already a close fit, wash it before using it so you're not caught off guard.
