Blackout curtains vs sheer curtains: which one does a child's room actually need?

Most parents go straight to blackout curtains because they've heard it helps babies sleep. That's true, to a point. If your child is under two and still napping in the afternoon, blackout curtains are worth it. Cutting out that 2pm sun streaming in from a west-facing window can genuinely be the difference between a 45-minute nap and a proper two-hour one.

But once your child is past the napping stage, full blackout can actually work against you. Kids who sleep in completely dark rooms sometimes find it harder to settle at night without the same conditions. They also tend to wake up disoriented in the early morning when light does eventually get in.

Sheer curtains are a better fit for older children's rooms. They soften harsh afternoon light without blocking it out completely, which keeps the room feeling airy and connected to the time of day. A room that gets filtered green-gold light through a soft cotton sheer feels completely different from one that's just dim.

The honest answer is: you might want both. A sheer for daytime that keeps the room bright but not glaring, and a heavier drape you can pull across during nap time or early bedtimes in summer.

Safe curtain fabrics for a baby or toddler room

This is where a lot of people don't think carefully enough. Curtains in a child's room are at nose-height. Babies pull at them. Toddlers rub their faces on them. So what they're made of, and how they were dyed, actually matters.

The fabric you want is mulmul cotton (also called mul or muslin). It's lightweight, breathable, and washes easily. It doesn't hold dust the way synthetic fabrics do, which is important if your child has any tendency toward allergies or asthma.

    What to avoid:

    • Polyester or polyester blends — they trap heat, don't breathe, and some cheaper versions off-gas chemical finishes
    • Heavy blackout fabrics with foam or rubber backing — fine for a guest room, but the backing can crack over time and isn't ideal in a space where a child is breathing for 10-12 hours a night
    • Fabrics treated with stain-resistant or flame-retardant coatings, unless they're certified safe

Hand block print curtains in natural cotton are a genuinely good choice for kids' rooms. The dyes used in traditional block printing are typically azo-free and derived from natural or certified safe pigments. The fabric itself is usually 100% cotton and pre-washed, so there's no chemical smell when you hang them up.

Getting the sizing right for Indian windows

Indian windows are not standardised, which makes curtain shopping more complicated than it should be. A "standard" window in a flat in Mumbai is often different from one in a Bengaluru apartment or a Delhi builder floor. But there are a few rules that hold across most homes.

For width: measure the width of your window frame, then multiply by 1.5 to 2. If your window is 42 inches wide, you want curtains that are at least 60-70 inches total when spread across the rod. Flat curtains that just cover the glass with no gather look stiff and unfinished in any room.

For a child's room specifically, go closer to 2x the width if you're using a lightweight sheer. The extra fabric gives it that soft, billowy look that works well in kids' spaces.

For length: measure from the rod down. Most Indian homes have floor-to-ceiling heights of 9 to 10 feet, but the rod is usually hung at 7.5 to 8 feet. Measure from where your rod will sit, not from the window frame top. For a child's room, floor-length curtains look best. Sill-length curtains tend to look dated and are more likely to get grabbed and pulled.

Add about 1 inch for the hem and 2-3 inches for the heading (the bit that goes over the rod or through the eyelet). If in doubt, order slightly longer and hem them yourself or have a local tailor take them up. It takes 10 minutes and costs almost nothing.

Curtain hanging styles that work in kids' rooms

Eyelet curtains are the easiest to use in a child's room. They slide smoothly on the rod, open and close without fuss, and they look tidy even when a child has pulled at them repeatedly. The ring opening sits flat against the rod, which means no loose cords.

This is the important bit: avoid any curtain with a pull cord in a room where a child under 6 sleeps or plays. Cord strangulation from window coverings is a real and documented hazard. If you do use a corded blind or curtain mechanism anywhere in the home, the cord should be tied up and out of reach at all times.

Tab top and rod pocket curtains work fine in older children's rooms, though they're slightly harder to open and close. For a room where curtains are being drawn and opened twice a day, eyelets are the most practical.

How to style a child's room without making it look like a toy store

The temptation when decorating a child's room is to go all-in on a theme. Dinosaurs on the curtains, dinosaurs on the bedding, dinosaur lamp. It's fun for about a year, and then your child decides they're into something else entirely and you're starting from scratch.

A better approach is to use the curtains and larger soft furnishings as a calm, considered base, and let the toys and art do the themed work. A soft green block print sheer reads as nature-inspired and grows with the child. Pair it with a personalised quilt and a name cushion, and the room feels personal without being cluttered.

The personalised block print name pillow is a nice addition if you want one element that's specific to your child without committing the entire room to a single colour scheme. It works alongside almost any curtain fabric because the base cloth is natural cotton.

When in doubt with a child's room, go softer and simpler than you think you need to. They'll fill the space with their own things soon enough.
