A Guide to Table Linen Sizes: Tablecloths, Runners, Placemats
Table linen is one of the easier areas to get right once you understand one simple measurement: the drop. Drop is the distance the cloth falls below the edge of the table on each side. Once you know the drop you want, sizing a tablecloth becomes arithmetic rather than guesswork. This guide covers how to size tablecloths for the most common Indian dining table shapes, when runners work better than full cloths, how placemats and napkins fit into the arrangement, and how to care for block-print cotton table linen.
How to Size a Tablecloth
Measuring Your Table
Measure your table's length and width (or diameter if round) at its longest and widest points. Write these down in inches or centimetres before you look at tablecloth dimensions, because it is easy to confuse the two measurements when you are comparing products.
Choosing Your Drop
The drop is the overhang on each side. Common drop lengths:
- 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm): Casual, everyday drop. The cloth sits close to the table edge. Good for family dining where children are involved or where you want the cloth to stay in place during active meals.
- 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm): The standard formal dining drop. The cloth hangs about one-third of the way to the floor from a standard 75 cm dining table. This is the most common choice for Indian dining rooms.
- Floor-length (30 inches or more): Fully formal or for display. The cloth reaches the floor. Used for buffet tables, altar tables, and formal event settings. Not typically practical for everyday use.
The Calculation
Table length + (2 x drop) = tablecloth length. Table width + (2 x drop) = tablecloth width.
For a standard 6-seater rectangular dining table that measures 72 inches x 36 inches (182 x 91 cm), with a 10-inch drop on each side: you need a tablecloth of 92 inches x 56 inches (234 x 142 cm).
For a 4-seater table at 48 inches x 30 inches (122 x 76 cm), with a 10-inch drop: you need 68 inches x 50 inches (172 x 127 cm).
If the tablecloth you find is slightly longer than your calculation, the extra length becomes extra drop. A little more drop on the length-side of a rectangular table is generally fine. Excess width is more noticeable, so be closer on the width dimension.

Round Tables
For a round table: measure the diameter, then add (2 x drop). A 48-inch round table with a 10-inch drop needs a 68-inch round tablecloth, or you can use a square cloth of at least 68 x 68 inches, which will drape in corner points. Corner-point draping on square cloths over round tables is a common styling choice in Indian homes and works well with block-print patterns because the corners show the print off.
Table Runners: When They Work Better
A table runner covers the centre strip of the table, typically 12 to 14 inches wide and long enough to hang 6 to 8 inches off each end of the table. It leaves the sides of the table uncovered.
Runners make sense in a few specific situations:
When you want to show the table surface. A wooden dining table with a good grain or a marble-top surface is worth seeing. A full tablecloth covers it. A runner lets the table show and adds colour and pattern to the centre without covering the whole top.
When layering over a full cloth. A contrasting block-print runner over a solid or lightly patterned tablecloth is one of the most effective ways to add visual interest to a table for guests. The runner breaks the visual monotony of a single cloth and adds a second print or colour. This combination is common in Indian festive table settings.
For long tables at events. A 12 to 14-foot dining table for a large gathering looks better with a runner than a patchwork of individual cloths. A long runner down the centre holds the table together visually while still allowing the table surface to show at the sides.

Placemats and Napkin Sets
Standard placemat dimensions are 12 x 18 inches (30 x 45 cm). This fits a dinner plate with room for cutlery on both sides. Some placemats are 13 x 19 or 14 x 20; these give more margin around the plate and work better for larger plates or when you want the placemat to be more visible around the plate.
On a 6-seater table, six placemats cover the table settings without needing a full tablecloth underneath. On a table that already has a tablecloth, placemats add a second layer of protection and a second pattern. Mixing a solid tablecloth with block-print placemats is a clean combination that lets the placemat pattern carry the design work.
Napkins at 16 x 16 inches (40 x 40 cm) fold into neat quarters for formal settings or into a loose fold for everyday use. A cotton block-print napkin set for six costs far less than linen napkins, washes more easily, and holds block-print patterns well through repeated use. Mixing Table Linen Pieces
The simplest combination for an Indian dining table that looks finished without effort: one solid or muted-pattern tablecloth as the base, block-print placemats in a coordinating colour, and matching or complementary napkins folded on each plate. For a festive occasion, add a block-print runner down the centre over the tablecloth. This layered approach uses three separate pieces but each does a distinct job: the cloth protects, the runner anchors the centre, and the placemats mark each seat.

Care for Block-Print Cotton Table Linen
Wash in cold water, gentle cycle, immediately after use if there are food stains. Cold water sets stains less aggressively than hot. For oily stains, a small amount of liquid dish soap applied before washing works well on cotton. Dry in shade rather than direct sun to preserve print colours. Iron on the reverse side at medium heat. Do not starch block-print cotton, as it can crack the printed surface over time.
With basic care, a block-print cotton tablecloth from Sanganer holds its colour and body through three to five years of regular weekly use and washing, longer if used only for occasions.
