Dohar vs AC Quilt: Choosing a Light Summer Blanket
If you have ever reached for a heavy razai in an air-conditioned room and immediately regretted it, or woken up cold under a single bedsheet, you already understand the gap that a dohar or AC quilt fills. The terminology causes more confusion than it should. Here is a clear breakdown of what each is, when each works, and how to choose.
What Is a Dohar
A dohar is a layered cotton blanket, traditionally made from two or three layers of muslin or soft cotton fabric stitched together. The word comes from the Hindi for "double layer." The construction is simple: no synthetic filling, no batting. The warmth comes purely from the layers of woven cotton trapping a small amount of air between them.
This makes a dohar light, breathable, and very washable. It is the Indian equivalent of what some markets call a summer quilt or a cotton throw, but the dohar has a specific construction logic tied to Indian summers and monsoons, where you need some cover but not insulation.
A block-print cotton dohar from Kari by Kriti is hand-printed in Sanganer before being layered and finished. The print goes through to the inner layers at the edges, so the product looks finished from all angles. Price range: Rs.1,499 to Rs.2,499 depending on size.
What Is an AC Quilt
An AC quilt, also called a summer quilt or AC comforter, has a thin layer of filling, typically hollow-fibre polyester or a very low GSM cotton batting, sandwiched between two fabric layers. The filling adds a small amount of insulation, making it warmer than a dohar but much lighter than a winter razai.
AC quilts are designed specifically for air-conditioned environments in Indian summers. The ambient temperature is around 22 to 25 degrees Celsius in a well-cooled room, which is cold enough to need something beyond a sheet but too warm for a full quilt. The AC quilt covers that range.
Dohar vs AC Quilt vs Razai by Season
March to June (Hot Summer)
Without AC: a dohar or a single cotton layer. The body needs to breathe. A dohar at 2 to 3 layers of cotton is enough for most people who prefer some cover while sleeping.
With AC set to 22 to 24 degrees: a light AC quilt. The cotton dohar may be slightly too thin for people who run cold.
July to September (Monsoon)
Humidity is high but temperatures drop at night. A dohar handles this well because cotton absorbs moisture and still feels comfortable against skin. An AC quilt works if you are sleeping in a controlled-humidity environment.
October to November (Transition)
An AC quilt is typically right for most of India. Nights are cool but not cold. A razai is too heavy for most nights.
December to February (Winter)
A winter razai for most of India. The dohar can work in cities like Mumbai or Chennai where winters are mild, but it is genuinely not warm enough for Delhi, Chandigarh, or Pune winters.
GSM and Weight: What the Numbers Mean
GSM stands for grams per square metre and refers to the weight of the fabric. For dohars, the outer cotton fabric is typically 80 to 120 GSM per layer. The overall weight of a dohar is light, usually 700 to 1,200 grams for a double size.
AC quilts have a filling layer with its own GSM rating. A summer AC quilt filling is typically 100 to 200 GSM. A winter quilt filling runs 300 to 500 GSM or higher. When a product is listed as "200 GSM AC quilt," that refers to the filling weight, not the total product weight.
For reference, a standard Kari block-print dohar (double size) weighs approximately 900 grams. An AC quilt at the same size typically weighs 1.2 to 1.6 kg with filling.
Care Instructions
Both dohars and AC quilts from Kari can be machine washed on a gentle cycle with cold water. Use a mild detergent. Do not use fabric softener on block-print cotton, it coats the fibres and reduces breathability over time. Tumble dry on low or line dry in shade. Avoid direct sun for extended periods, it fades block-print colours faster.
Cotton dohars can be washed frequently without damage. The fibres actually soften slightly with each wash, which is a feature rather than a flaw.
